Crown

Reference

StanfordReport, 06/14/2026, ‘Set your heart ablaze,’ Sundar Pichai tells the Class of 2026, https://news.stanford.edu/stories/2026/06/commencement-address-google-ceo-sundar-pichai

去年刚刚辞职当上自由人前，曾经写过一篇告别职场文，其中有几句是“I will be having enough time to do other interesting things like martial arts, reading books, travel, taking care of my family members, all really mean a lot to me.”

Last week a job market news hit me: IBM is closing its China R&D operation, affecting more than 1000 jobs. This is not the first tech giant who retreated from China, and will not be the last – in May 2024, another tech giant Microsoft had asked China-based cloud computing and artificial intelligence operations employees to consider relocating out of the country, affecting 700 to 800 people in total.

On an Chinese Internet forum, some people had recollected their memories with IBM, mostly former or current IBM employees. One partitular post stated that working in a foreign-owned company like IBM you feel you are treated like a humankind, while in our domestic companies you are treated like cattles. While I cannot agree with every aspect of this statement, I do agree that domestic componies are lack of respect of their employees.

Having worked in a foreign-owned software company for 3 years before being hired by an domestic Internet giant, I have fully experienced the culture differences between the two types of corporations. In that small foreign company, employees’ time, growth, privacy are greatly respected; while in the domestic company, although a tech giant, people’s personal awareness is constantly dismissed – in other words, employee is completely owned by the company.

Why is this? While I know little about the forming of corporate culture, I would suggest that this difference stems from multiple reasons.

First of all, economic development is thought of as the most import goal in the top-level design, human source is a great source of development power. Under the development-first thought framework, all that can be used will be used (as a tool or source), thinking little about the needs of the tools. Through the years, the society has also accepted that design, meaning that employers, employees, and the supervising orgnizations have all agreed that top-level design. Accidentally some one would discover he/she has been traped in an bad situation and tries to change, but soon will find it useless since the power of the entire society is so huge and stops.

Secondly, social resource is scarce relative to absolute population, people have to compete for resource. This is common in East Asia – China, Korea, Japan. Who cares about working an extra hour if he is starving? Spoken in other words, the first day a man is born in such places, he is doomed to work hard to survive.

There is yet another obvious reason to consider: the unfairness from supervising governance. While the supervisor keeps tolerant to domestic companies’ flagrant disobedient to labour laws, it shows zero-tolerance to foreign entities. the reason to tolerant to domestic companies is to lower their operation costs (since all employee awareness activities costs money), to keep relative competition superiority in the global markets.

All above reasons are obvious, but change is difficult. I wonder if one day our nation had gained the absolute power in global competition our people would live a easier life.

NOTE: This is a letter I wrote in the last days in office, intended to be posted to WeChat moments, but I’m afraid it would bring too much anxiety to my parents and friends, then after think twice I decided to post it here.

Hi Everyone, I’m really excited to be announcing that I’m quitting from professional career path and looking forward to a truely meaningful new life.

Since graduate in 2005 I’ve been working for a salary for almost 20 years – getting up early, going to and staying in office at least 9 hours, back to rented house, seeking some fun and fall asleep, EVERY DAY, and 20 years more yet to come! I cannot stop but to think how boring it is. Is this the life I want to live?

This retrospect comes with additional bitterness: the overtime work-hours, the lack of social activity, the 35-years-old curse, the toxic office culture, and more. these seemingly trivial things in junior years become unaffordable as they accumulate.

As a software engineer, I strive to write good code and make the world better, but through the years I’ve learnt that as a paid employee it’s hard to align my personal ambition with company goals. In the industry, oftentimes the project you are working on either is not interesting to you at all, or is merely repeating what have been repeated time and again. Sooner or later one completely loses interest in the job, which then becomes routine, tedious, and goes on and on until you cannot afford any more.

What’s more, looking from a higher perspective, if everything goes as planned, my life will be routine like dead water: study from school, work for 40 years, retire at old age and wait to die. How RIDICULOUS!

As such, I have decided to quit and start some interesting projects for my own. Write a website sharing ideas, start a online shop selling electronics parts and widgets, etc. Further more, I will be having enough time to do other interesting things like martial arts, reading books, travel, taking care of my family members, all really mean a lot to me.

So that’s all. My dear friends, wish you all happy and healthy.

— Yours, GB

2024/06/26
